Voodoo
Bokor 29er Single Speed Custom
By
Jim Knaup
Our rental fleet now has a unique addition - a custom built Voodoo 29er
single speed.
We have offered full suspension and twenty nine inch wheeled bikes for
rent for a while, and it is a great chance to “try it before you buy
it” if you are considering something new. For a lot of people the
concept of a 29inch single speed mountain bike seems a little too
regressive to even consider, but new single speed converts are made
every day, and renting our Voodoo is a great way to dip your toe in the
water before taking the plunge.
In theory some things add up: Start with light weight, and a 29" wheel
that has a larger attack angle, which translate to a better roll over
of small objects, a different contact patch that really hooks up, and
more efficient power transmission with only one gear... it makes you
feel like a kid. In practice, things don’t add up so well... top shelf
29er single speeds will sell for $3,000 or more. Our challenge
was building a high quality bike that didn’t break the bank.
Our end result is a bike that has about a $1,250 price tag. Could we
have cut a few more corners? Probably, but not without some sacrifices.
Perhaps the biggest compromise in terms of cost was going with a rigid
fork... Remember the bigger wheel rolls smoother, the rigid fork
is lighter with less maintenance, and the combination climbs
unbelievably well... but if you want a nice suspension fork we can do
that too, heck, we can even build one up with gears.

Some of the components we spec’ed for this bike include:
Voodoo Bokor 29er frame
Designed by Joe Murray
Lightweight frame, 7000 series aluminum
Rear sliding dropout has option to setup for singlespeed or
geared.
Avid BB-5 disc brakes, great stopping power with low maintenance.
Shimano Deore crankset and BB, durable and stiff, great for
singlespeed riding.
Mavic / Shimano Deore hub wheelset, stable and lightweight, use
geared or singlespeed.
Want to give it a quick try, come on by. Want to take it out for a half
or full day to see what it is like to live with, rent it - then if you
decide to buy within 30 days, your rental fee will be deducted from the
cost. It is OK to dream it, because we can build it.

Ironclad Bicycles Pre-Whiskey Event
4/16.
Yep, we’re doing it again this year. In an effort to help our local
riders prep for the Whiskey, and get their bikes sorted out, our
Pre-Whiskey training ride will leave shop at 11:30 Saturday morning on
April sixteenth. Tim has laid out a course that incorporates a
good portion of the Whiskey route, and considers it an “intermediate
ride” (intermediate for Tim means a lot of huffing and puffing for most
others) If you are feeling tentative, take comfort in the fact that Tim
also incorporated a couple of “bail out points” where you can duck out,
and find your way back to the shop where refreshments and food will be
served.
